What is an NFC business card and how does it work?

6 min read

You already know the gesture: hold your phone to a payment terminal and it's paid. An NFC business card uses that exact same technology — but instead of paying, you share who you are in one tap.

What does NFC mean?

NFC stands for ‘Near Field Communication’: wireless communication over a few centimetres. It's the technology behind contactless payment and your access badge at work. An NFC business card holds a tiny battery-free chip that activates as soon as a phone comes close.

Importantly, that chip contains no personal data. It only carries a secure link to your online profile. That keeps your information editable, and means you never share more than you want.

How does it work in practice?

You hold the card against the top of a smartphone. A notification appears, the other person taps it and your profile opens in the browser — with your name, role, photo and all contact buttons. The recipient installs nothing.

With the ‘save contact’ button, the other person puts your details straight into their address book (a vCard). If the phone doesn't do NFC, they scan the QR code on the card and open the same profile.

What can go on your digital profile?

Whatever is relevant: phone, email, WhatsApp, website, address and directions, social media, a booking link or a link to your shop. You choose the buttons, the order and the style, from clean black-and-white to your own brand identity.

Because the profile is digital, you update it anytime. New role, new number, new campaign — you change it online and anyone who taps your card sees the current version at once.

Who is it for?

For anyone who shares contact details: salespeople, consultants, caregivers, tradespeople, freelancers, agents and whole teams. Anywhere a smooth first impression and easy reachability matter.

Companies also use NFC cards to equip their entire team with a uniform brand identity and central management: assign cards, block them if lost and roll out one theme across everyone.

In short

  • NFC is the same contactless technology as contactless payment — over a few centimetres.
  • The card holds only a secure link to your profile, no personal data.
  • One tap opens your profile in the browser; the recipient installs nothing.
  • Your profile is always editable, with the buttons and style you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app or subscription to tap?

The recipient never needs an app. As a cardholder, the first year of profile hosting is included; after that it's €3/month to keep your profile online. The card stays yours.

Does it work on every smartphone?

NFC works on iPhone (7 and newer) and most Android phones. For older or disabled NFC there's always the QR code as a fallback.

Is an NFC business card safe?

Yes. The chip holds only a link, no personal data, and can't transmit a virus. You decide which details appear on your profile and can change them anytime.

Can someone steal my data by tapping the card?

No. Tapping only opens your public profile — the same info you deliberately share. Nothing is read from your phone or account.

What happens if I lose my card?

You can block the card in your account or detach the linked profile, so a found card no longer shows current details. Companies can do this centrally.

What does an NFC business card cost?

At Eazy Connect a card starts at €29 (PVC), with variants in wood (€64) and other materials. The first year of hosting is included; then €3/month.
